Then go and have a ride with Picasa. It's totally fee, very simple and userfriendly. Found all my images in a breeze and works real quick on my 2.5 years old laptop. If you're looking for alternative then try Adobe's Photoshop Album Starter Edition which is also free but in my opinion offers not so many options in equally simple user interface.
In my home computer I have switched to iView MediaPro because it supports IPCT embedded information, has more features and can handle my 5000+ images (and is not for free) but if you're just taking photos and want them nicely organised then try Picasa. One click image editing comes as added bonus. And your original files are never touched. Nice.
Small addition: There's a nice side-by-side overview of Picasa 2 and Apple's iPhoto 5 by David Pogue from NYTimes. Mind you, that Picasa only works on Windows machines and iPhoto only on Macs.
